Every Saturday at 5.30 pm and Sunday at 10.30am Mass is held at the church. During the summer season, there is an additional Mass Held on Wednesdays at 5.30pm. This house of worship can be located at 632 Catawba Avenue, close to the Erie Islands Branch Library, Townhall and the Put- in- Bay High School. There are also other places of worship in the area such as St Paul’s Episcopal Church as well as St. John at the Bay Lutheran Church.
Every Sunday on the bay is always a special occasion. After attending Sunday mass people tend to enjoy going out for brunch at one of the many selections of restaurants on the island. Places that are within walking distance include the Chocolate Cafe, Reel Bar and the Old Forge.
The History of Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church
After the war of 1812, Put- In- Bay become a popular destination for permanent residents due to its scenic location and prime winemaking conditions. Founding father Jose DeRivera was instrumental in the development and in moving Put-in-Bay forward. In 1876 the three islands Gibraltar, Middle, and South Bass organized the Lake Erie Islands first formal form of government known as a township. The downtown area incorporated into a village known as Put-in-Bay and remains that way to date. The first church was small and completed in 1876 but soon the community outgrew the church and the current day Mother Of Sorrow church was completed in 1929 The impressive Rose Stain Glass window sets off vibrant colors even in the modern day and the church added another addition circa 2010.
