Perry’s Cave is the shining star and is truly a magical place to visit. The cave is 52 feet below the surface and wasn’t discovered until 1813. During the War of 1812, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry was desperate to find water for his dehydrated troops during the Battle of Lake Erie. Luckily, he came across this interesting cave which is home to an underground freshwater lake. Because of this coincidental discovery, Commodore Perry is credited for its discovery.
This enigmatic underground lake is a little island mystery, the lake rises and falls with the tides of Lake Erie with no actual connection to the lake itself. It has been a freshwater oasis since it’s discovery, even supplying water to the famous Victory Hotel before it burned to the ground in 1919.
Even on the hottest of days, you’ll need a sweater when taking a tour of this cave, the temperature stays at a cool 52 degrees Fahrenheit.
